This Health and Safety Policy sets out the principles and procedures that Gardeners Watford follows to protect our customers, our team members, subcontractors, visitors and members of the public while we deliver gardening and grounds maintenance services. Our objective is to prevent accidents, injuries, ill health and damage to property by managing risks effectively in all gardening activities.

Policy Statement and Responsibilities

Gardeners Watford is committed to maintaining high standards of health and safety in every aspect of our work. We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice for gardening and grounds maintenance services. The management team is responsible for implementing and reviewing this policy and for ensuring that appropriate resources, training and supervision are provided.

All employees and subcontractors working on behalf of Gardeners Watford have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, wear appropriate personal protective equipment and report hazards, incidents and near misses without delay.

Risk Assessment and Safe Working Practices

Before starting gardening work at any site, a suitable and sufficient risk assessment will be carried out or reviewed. This assessment will consider the nature of the work, the layout and condition of the garden or grounds, access routes, tools and machinery in use, weather conditions and the presence of other people, including children and pets.

Control measures will be identified and implemented to reduce risks to an acceptable level. These may include restricting access to working areas, clearly communicating with customers and neighbours, using barriers or warning signs where appropriate, and adjusting work methods to suit specific site conditions. Working at Height and Slopes

When tasks require working at height, for example using ladders or accessing raised beds, Gardeners Watford will ensure that suitable equipment is used and that operators are competent and trained. Ladders will be positioned on stable, level ground and secured where necessary. Overreaching will be avoided and tools will be passed safely rather than thrown or dropped.

On sloping or uneven ground, additional care will be taken to maintain secure footing and stable positioning of equipment. Where conditions are unsuitable due to weather or ground instability, work will be postponed or alternative methods will be considered.

Protection of Customers, Public and Property
